Employer Role
- January/February/March
- Employer Recruitment – employers provide a job profile that offers 180 hours (minimum) of paid work experience between June – December and an additional 180 hours (minimum) between January – August
- May
- All completed job applications will be forwarded to the employer by the Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator
- The employer will review the applications (short list if necessary) and interview the selected student(s). The student(s) that best meets the employer’s job requirements will be offered the position. If it is the desire of the employer, a student may also work part-time throughout the school year. This arrangement should be determined at the time of the interview.
- June
- The selected student and parents are required to attend an Orientation session during the month of June. Employers and/or supervisors may also be invited to attend the session.
- July – August
- Students and employers will receive a monitoring visit/call during July or August by a YAP Coordinator/representative. The intent of the visit/call is to provide support for the ongoing partnership. This will be done during both summer work periods.
Student Role
- April
- A presentation on “What is Youth Apprenticeship” will be presented to School District 2 students in grades 10 and 11 in the spring. Students will be made aware of the job opportunities available to them through the Youth Apprenticeship Program and its' commitments.
- Those wishing to make application to the program will submit a YAP application, a resume with cover letter to their Guidance office. An application does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
- May
- Employers will short-list the job applications and then interview for the position. The successful applicant(s) chosen becomes a Youth Apprentice.
- June
- The selected student and parent (employer may also be invited to attend) are required to attend an orientation workshop during the month of June.
- YAP students will attend a 4½-day residential workshop in late June. Students will receive employability skills training that will help prepare them for their first work experience as a Youth Apprentice. All workshops are mandatory.
- July - August
- The majority of YAP students will complete each work term during the summer months; however, there will be exceptions to this, especially for students working retail positions. In such cases, the first work term must be completed between June – December and the second between January – August. Each work term will require approx 180 hours of paid work experience.
- September
- YAP students will attend an evening meeting.
- November - December
- YAP students will attend a 2-day Safety Start session on parent/teacher days. Students are responsible to this as an independent learning activity so if they choose to do their First Aid/CPR at another time they can.
- YAP students will participate in our YAP Etiquette dinner.
- YAP students must have their Preferred Admission form for NBCC submitted.
- January - February
- YAP students must have their Preferred Admission form for universities submitted.
- YAP students should contact their YAP employers to confirm their next work period.
- April
- YAP students attend a 3 day workshop.
- July - August
- YAP students complete their last work period.
- YAP students must submit their Final Report.
- YAP students Graduation
