Parent Overview

The Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) is being offered to grade 10 and 11 students in School District 2. It represents an innovative approach to preparing youth for employability in a rapidly changing and global economy. The program reflects a multi-level, collaborative partnership involving secondary and post-secondary educational institutions, government, business organizations and New Brunswick employers. The YAP provides youth with an opportunity to experience the “world of work” and expand their knowledge of essential employability skills as outlined by the Conference Board of Canada.

This program operates outside the regular school curriculum, at which time students gain paid work experience and employability skills training. This is a competitive process and successful students will partner with an employer for two consecutive summers wherever possible.

Assemblies for grades 10 and 11 students will be held in April, in District 02’s high schools to inform the students of the opportunities available to them and the application process for this program. All submitted applications will be screened and those who meet the employer’s requirements may be sent for an interview. The successful student who is hired by the employer is accepted into the Youth Apprenticeship Program. Students who are presently working and wish to become part of the program to gain the invaluable training offered may also apply.

Student Benefits:

  • Paid summer employment, approximately a minimum of 360 hours (180 per phase)
  • Acquisition of 100 plus hours of employability skills training from professionals in the business community.
  • An opportunity to “network” with employers.

  • Develops maturity and increased self-confidence.
  • Completing the employability skills workshops provides students with knowledge and a certification document to include in their portfolio for future employment opportunities.
  • Preferred seat at NBCC when all minimum requirements are met.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if more information is needed or if you are an employer who may be interested in partnering with School District 2.
