Students from grades 8 to 12 were delighted to see a live green screen workshop presented by The Centre for Art and Technology Fredericton. Students first were introduced to proper lighting techniques and Hollywood examples of the technology in use. The presenters then showed an example of a real person moving in a digital 3D space complete with multiple rooms and objects with which to interact.
The presenters called for a volunteer and Joseph Elderkin jumped at the chance. Joseph’s first movie star request was simple. "No pictures please." The room filled with laughter as the many digital cameras snapped this memory.
Joseph was placed in front of the lit green screen and with a few mouse clicks he turned to see himself standing in front of a busy streets and park trees. Joseph was encouraged to interact with the trees and students got to see both the set and final footage all at once.
Mr. Collicot then spoke to the group who were mostly grade 12 students mentioning their program focussing on both artisitic and technological skills and careers this training could lead to in New Brunswick and worldwide.
The Centre for Art and Technology can present this workshop in nearly any classroom in Atlantic Canada and more information can be obtained by visiting their website or contacting Mr. Kelly at 734-3710.

The grade six classes at Lou MacNarin School read about Iqbal Massih, a child labourer who fought for the rights of children around the world before he was killed at the age of 12. One class was so moved by his story that the students decided to plan and organize a fundraiser for Free the Children’s Alternative Income Campaign. They will be raising money to support mothers in developing countries, allowing them to purchase materials for their farms or to start their own businesses. This economic support will give families a chance to earn an income without having to send their children to work. The students have done a great deal of research to prepare for the fundraiser and have connected it to the curriculum by doing expository and persuasive writing in order to convince school members to participate.
On March 16th, they kicked off the fundraiser with an assembly, making use of their speaking and listening skills in an authentic situation, and they will be leading a variety of activities the week of March 26th in order to collect funds. Claude D. Taylor School will be hosting an inter-scholastic Robotics Competition for grades 4 and 5 students on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012. Nineteen teams, consisting of 57 students from three schools (Claude D. Taylor, Salisbury Elementary, and Hillsborough Elementary), will present their MindStorm NXT and Dacta LEGOT projects to our engineering partners for judging. This enrichment activity is open to the public for viewing between 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Claude D. Taylor School Robotics Club has entered its seventh year with a contingency of 30 robotic members from grade 4-5 who have been working together in ten teams using MindStorm NXT LEGOT kits. The club has been working in building and programming robots to conduct specific tasks. As well, working within individual teams and as a Club on the whole, the members have supported each other in their discoveries while collaborating on their research-based presentations related to engineering and robotics.
Salisbury Elementary is joining the Robotics Competition for their third time this year with 30 very enthusiastic students. They have been exploring the world of engineers through research, and engineering challenges designed to build their problem solving skills. The six teams have created robots with diverse designs and abilities using the MindStorm NXT LEGOT kits.
Robotics has expanded to include another school in the competition, inviting Hillsborough Elementary for their first presentation. For several months, seven students have been creating their engineering constructs for fun and learning, using the motorized LEGOTM Dacta kits.
Our clubs have been generously supported by our community engineering partners of John Gallant and Lisa Grasse (RV Anderson Associates Limited) who have committed their time and resources towards a successful year in building and programming robotics.
We are also appreciative of The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick who have provided funding and support of this program.
The focus of the Robotics Club is to provide an enrichment activity that will facilitate development in the areas of: teamwork, commitment, problem-solving, strategizing, presentation skills and computer programming.

Dear Educator,
Climate change will transform our province, our country and our world over the coming decades. We are at a crossroads where the world can take action or continue business as usual. Do your students feel empowered to act on climate change? Lights Out Canada (www.lightsoutcanada.org) is an annual event that I founded at the age of 16 in 2005, during which schools turn off their lights and follow lesson plans we provide on climate change and how youth can take action. Our materials seek to engage students with the science of climate change and empower them to take action. Participants lend their efforts to a national movement for change involving nearly 170 000 individuals across Canada in last year's event alone. This year's Lights Out Canada will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012.
Our resource packages (K-12) are available online. The materials include posters, a press pack, lesson plans and step-by-step instructions for how to organize Lights Out.
Register online for the 7th annual Lights Out Canada. More information can be found at www.lightsoutcanada.org.
School boards across Canada are challenging all of the schools in their districts to sign-up. Why not be the one to lead the challenge in your district?
Check out our Map of Participants and Rick Mercer's message for schools last year.
Thank you for your time! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, email us at: lightsoutcanada@gmail.com.
Sincerely, Keleigh Annau
Founder and Coordinator of Lights Out Canada

Students and staff of West Riverview Elementary School will be celebrating Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 29th in an effort to stop hurtful behaviours. In combination with this, we are putting great emphasis on "Filling Buckets". All classrooms received a book called Have You Filled A Bucket Today? which explains that all people have invisible buckets that contain their thoughts and feelings. Each person has the opportunity to be a "Bucket Filler" by showing kindness or conversely being a "Bucket Dipper" by being hurtful. Colorful drawings of giant buckets have been placed in the K-2 and 3-5 wings with pictures of every student in the school artfully surrounding the buckets. All teachers will read Have You Filled A Bucket Today? to their class and this will be followed by a variety of activities including discussions, writing, role plays, and decorating buckets.
Many teachers as well as students have organized a creative, engaging, and powerful assembly to take place on Wednesday, February 29th. Following this, students will use the buckets they decorated to create a giant heart on the school grounds to demonstrate their commitment to being "Bucket Fillers"! For more information, please contact Kimberley Robb at 856-3451.

To celebrate National Hockey Day in Canada as well as promoting literacy, we began a few years ago coordinating a day when the local community hockey players, who are students in our school, would read a book to an elementary school hockey player as well as play a pick up game. As the elementary students look up to our senior students; it is our hope that we can foster a positive relationship between reading and sports as well as being role models to others.
Hockey players at Caledonia Regional High School were paired with hockey players from Hillsborough Elementary School for a fun-filled literacy activity. With the help of librarian, Kate Hanson, students at HES chose books to read to hockey players from CRHS. This event was held in honour of Hockey Day in Canada celebrations which are happening Feb. 11th from Canadian coast to coast. The event was a fantastic promotion of literacy and ended with a friendly game of floor hockey organized by Phys. Ed teacher Leah Williams. Vice Principal, Barry Snider, wore the stripes as referee. Although some calls were questionable, we had a great time!

Excitement is in the air at Forest Glen School. The long awaited day finally arrived, making our fundraising projects well worth the effort. On Tuesday morning, it was exciting to see the students eagerly crowded around the door of the gym to see the new climbing wall, complete with a giant Christmas bow! As gym classes began for the day, there was a lot of intense concentration. During PE class, students have been carefully studying the holds in an attempt to figure out how to traverse from one side of the wall to the other, without touching the ground. Quite a mental challenge indeed! It is great to be able provide an activity where the children can have fun while at the same time helping them develop important neural connections in the brain through climbing, hanging and traversing!

As our cold winter months are upon us, I would remind everyone to take care of their health and safety. It is important for our students to dress appropriately for the cold weather and to be mindful of changes in the weather that can bring about slippery sidewalks and roads. During cold and flu season, it is even more important for everyone to use proper hand washing techniques. It is also a great time to revisit eating and sleeping habits. Students who come to school well rested and well nourished will have a much greater chance of success.
I appreciate all of the support from parents, community and staff who assist students with these health and safety needs. Sincere best wishes for a healthy 2012.
Sincerely,
Karen Branscombe, Superintendent

The grade 8s at Sunny Brae School have stepped up to the plate with their Tech projects.
Thanks to the creativity of Mrs. West, students were assigned a makeover project where a scenario that needed some redesigning was given.
Students had to plan the renovations, calculating costs for all materials and labour, using an excel spreadsheet, then using their netbooks to design the changes.
Finally they presented their new improvements to not only their teacher, but to Greg and Susan Hayden, owners of Hayden Homes, (based in Woodstock). These contractors evaluated the grade 8s' projects and gave them valuable feedback. Bringing reality to the classroom has been a very positive and enriching experience for all students!

Students in Ms. Jessome's Grade 7 Social Studies class presented their PBL projects on November 29, 2011. The projects were designed around the question "How can RMS students raise awareness in the community and secure support to children in need and poverty?" The class has been working very hard investigating and reporting on the challenges of the poverty cycle. They have an understanding of the causes of poverty and the kinds of interventions that they can do to make a difference.
The students did a wonderful job of overcoming stage fright to present their chosen charities to parents, peers and a panel of judges from the Moncton Progress Club. After a difficult deliberation, The Moncton Progress Club awarded Nathan Bartlett, Jacob Ward and Josh French who represented Habitat for Humanity a cheque for $1500 to go towards this worthwhile cause. Congratulations boys and the rest of the class for all your hard work on this project.

Forest Glen Home & School is trying a new exciting fundraising idea this year to top up the funding for a very special project, our indoor climbing wall. Our teaching staff has been researching some of the best ways to help children reach their full learning potential. In our recent study of a book by Eric Jensen, we learned about the important link between physical activity and cognitive development.
One of the activities that works best is the hand-over-hand action which helps develop both the right and left sides of the brain, developing new neural pathways.
From November 15th to 18th Forest Glen School will be holding an on-line auction to assist in the final fundraising for an Interior Rock Climbing Wall for the school children.
We have been fundraising for two years and are within $1000.00 of our final fundraising goal. Our hopes are to have the wall completed prior to the completion of the winter term to allow children the opportunity to have a warm, safe, and adventurous activity to do indoors during the cold harsh winter months.
We are very excited about the possibility of raising enough funds to have an indoor climbing wall for our students.
Auction items will be posted soon at: http://forestglenschool.e-flea.ca/

We would like to inform you about a recent issue that has come to the attention of the grade 7/8 immersion class through a reading assignment taken from the Times and Transcript.
There is a 3-year-old boy from Riverview named Kendric Campbell who is currently at the IWK undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. The treatments needed are up to 600 dollars per day and this is not covered by Medicare. This class couldn't sit by and not do anything to help. The students of the 7/8 immersion class have decided to hold a school-wide coin drive, whereby each class will participate in this fundraising competition. Homeroom classes from k-8 will be collecting money during this period of time and the class who has raised the most money will win an ice-cream sundae party hosted by the 7/8 class.
Donations will be accepted until November 18th. Our goal is to raise enough money for as many days of treatment as possible for little Kendric. Remember, every coin can make a difference. The 7/8 immersion class thanks you in advance for your time and cooperation. Sincerely, Debby Evans

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace. - Veterans Affairs Canada
"We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument." - Source: Heather Robertson, A Terrible Beauty, The Art of Canada at War. Toronto, Lorimer, 1977.

Students and Teachers attending NBASAA's (New Brunswick Association of Student Activity Advisors) 26th Annual Provincial Student Leadership Conference organized a "Flash Mob" Raking event that took place on Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 (the final day of their three day conference).
The Community Outreach Project is a very important part of the conference and this year's event was especially fun as students and teachers raked and rocked to the tunes played on their portable sound equipment. Over 40 bags of leaves were raked in under an hour; a testament to the old adage "Many hands make light work".
Pictured is the group of students and teachers who participated in the Flash Mob. They showed up at a man's house, and raked his entire lawn in one hour. Part of the conference is about giving community service. The man had recently had a heart attack and was unable to keep up with his yard work.

The second presentation was led by Kandi Horsman, D2 Tech mentor, who taught teachers how to use Google documents, so students can benefit from having access to working in groups, working with the teacher or working individually at home while using their netbooks.

Michael Land, Grade 4 teacher at Hillsborough Elementary School, has been awarded the Heritage National Excellence Award. Rebecca Davidson, a Grade 5 student at HES, felt Michael was worthy of this award and sent in a letter to nominate him as the recipient. Michael was chosen to represent Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces for this award. Congratulations Michael.
Heritage National Excellence Awards: a NEAT way to recognize educators
The efforts of talented, inspiring and dedicated teachers aren't always recognized. That's why Heritage Educational Foundation created the Heritage National Excellence Awards for Teachers – or Heritage NEAT, for short.
Rewarding teachers' efforts
Each year, Heritage NEAT acknowledges individual teachers who have introduced innovative methods of teaching and learning. By stretching the horizons and raising the expectations of their students, they make a real difference in the lives of our children. Award recipients are selected from five regions: British Columbia and Yukon, the Prairies, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The five successful teachers each receive a $5,000 award – and our sincere appreciation.

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are found worldwide, including New Brunswick. Head lice are insects that live close to the human scalp and feed on blood. They are a nuisance but head lice do not transmit disease. Parents are often embarrassed if they discover that their children have contracted head lice, but research has shown that these parasites do not indicate low socioeconomic status or poor personal hygiene. Anyone can get head lice.

Gunningsville School would like to thank Mrs. Arnold, Dr. Martin, and the Frye Festival for their generous donation of over a hundred new books to our school library.
It is so important to have up-to-date and age appropriate books within our classrooms as well as our libraries. During a time where any information can be received by the click of a button, it is imperative that students know how to couple research done using technology with tangible resources that provide concrete information in the form of books. It is so rewarding to see our students get excited about a new book from their favourite author, share information they learned from reading for pleasure at home, or do independent research using our library.
The Frye Festival, The Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Award program, as well as the Writers in the School program are just a few examples of outside sources that aid our classroom teachers in promoting literacy within our schools.

Schools are encouraged to get a team together to come and cheer the over 1500 runners participating in the Legs for Literacy race on October 23rd. Everyone is welcome, school bands, clubs, H&S's, sports teams, cheer leaders you name it!
The goal of the School Cheer Challenge is twofold:
1. Have student groups encourage and inspire the runners along the course.
2. Provide an opportunity for school groups to compete for a cash prize of $500 to use at their disposal.
We are now accepting registrations from schools to take part in this years' event and encourage each school to register a group. Each group entered will be assigned a location along the route from which to cheer. School groups must have a teacher or parent volunteer accompany them at all times.
Schools will be judged on the following criteria:
Last year's winners, Birchmount School, were located at the Riverview Gazebo and did a fabulous job entertaining the half and full marathon runners. This event is a great way to get kids in motion, involved in a community event and give them the opportunity to win a cash prize for their school group.

School District 2 mourns the loss of a young teacher this week. On Saturday, Trevor Nason was killed in an accident. Mr. Nason was a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School for the past two years and at Caledonia High School this school year. His love of teaching was honoured last year as he won Discovery Education's Atlantic Division Iron Science teacher award. He then represented School District 2 at the National Championship in Calgary and was awarded the Discovery Channel's National Iron Science Teacher Award.
To teach is to "touch the lives of students". Trevor Nason certainly did this at a very young age. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the school communities.
Sincerely,
Karen Branscombe, Superintendent
