Fri May 23, 2008: West Riverview Elementary Students Seek Science Wisdom from Riverview High Students

Riverview High Science Students recently presented 7 of their grand projects to Grade 3-5 West Riverview Elementary students. West Riverview invited teachers Tim Beattie and Trevor Nason to organize grand projects around a Grade 5 science resource called MegaSearch. MegaSearch is a free publication of the Dalhousie University Medical School developed to work with our curricular outcomes and to promote interest in science and research. Heart rates appeared on monitors, grimaces often appeared during the senses tests, planets were brought to life, simple machines were explained, wows were heard as chemical changes occurred, taste buds were stimulated with class-made ice cream, and smiles broadened as heart beats were heard. We are not quite sure who had the most fun - the RHS or the WRES students. For further information contact Diane Gillis at 856-3451.

Fri May 23, 2008: Partnership Between Moncton Alternate Education and Moncton Headstart

Over the past Winter and Spring, for one hour per week, 6 students from the Moncton Alternate Education Center have been going to Moncton Headstart to read to pre-school children. Follow-up training was also provided by Moncton Headstart so that the high school students could improve upon their techniques. The partnership had been facilitated by School District 2 Community Schools.

Moncton Alternate Education student Ryan Estabrooks stated that he saw improvement in the pre-school students after a few months. "The children were able to recognize more of the words and pictures," stated Ryan. "As I get older, I realize I'm one step closer to having to look after children at this age and doing this really helps."

Clare Archibald, Executive Director of Moncton Headstart, is enthusiastic about the partnership and feels that it is a win-win for both groups of students. She looks forward to the partnership continuing in the next school year. For more information please contact Dave Wheaton at 872-2948.

Fri May 23, 2008: Magnetic Hill Environmental Project

On Friday, May 23rd, Magnetic Hill School in partnership with Superstore, Price Contractors and Bremner's Farm Equipment completed the final phase in our year long environmental project. Magnetic Hill School has been involved in a plastic bag recycling project with Superstore. Over the course of the year, more than 1,000 pounds of plastic bags were recycled and diverted from our land fill. As a celebration of this milestone, annuals, planters and 4 specimen trees were donated to the school by Superstore. Despite the wet and rainy day, these trees were planted by Price Landscaping, Bremner's Farm Equipment and students from Magnetic Hill School. The Ash, Linden, Huckberry and Serviceberry trees are in addition to the 2 cedars that had been donated by Home Depot Moncton. The bag recycling project was so successful that it will continue into the 2008-09 academic year.

At lunch time all students and staff were treated to a submarine lunch by Superstore.

Pictured are students from Magnetic Hill along with Ray Davidson from Superstore and Kevin Nauss from Price Landscaping.

Thank you to everyone who made this environmental project such a huge success.

Thu May 22, 2008: Queen Elizabeth School Raises $1,000 for NB Heart and Stroke Foundation

Queen Elizabeth School students, who raised the most money per capita in their classes, were given the honour recently of rolling their money to the bank. During the entire month of February, a penny drive, chaired by Mrs. Dianne Dallaire, was underway to raise awareness of and funds for the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation. For the next two months, students and staff took turns rolling the coins and tabulating the amounts collected in each class. A total of 94, 802 pennies were collected, counted and rolled. The top fundraisers, shown in the picture above were Mme Pellerin's Grade 8 class and Mr. Leard's Grade 3 class both of which will be rewarded for their efforts with a pizza party sponsored by the CIBC. Kent supplied the wagons to transport the coins to the bank while Kwik Copy provided the $1000.00 cheque that Queen Elizabeth School presented to Nisha MacBeath, Moncton coordinator of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Fri May 9, 2008: Oulton College Dental Education Center Gives District 2 Students Brighter Smiles

Oulton College Dental Education Center is about to make some lucky students' smiles a little brighter.

The College has been working with School District 2 Community Schools, Forest Glen and Beaverbrook, to deliver special education programs to individual classes. Schools have had fluoride programs running for many years, supported by both staff and parent volunteers. This year, dental education students from Oulton College have added to the program by providing some education around dental care in the classrooms.

"This has been an exciting year for our education programs. Being involved in community programs like this allows our students to experience health promotion and education in the community while meeting their learning objectives in our Community Health curriculum," says Darcie Robichaud, VP of Studies and COO.

"Along with Mary Pelletier, instructor, our students have been to both Community Schools to deliver lesson plans on oral health related topics. This week will complete our project in celebration of Oral Health Month as we provide dental hygiene services for 20 children free of charge."

The students were selected by their teacher and principal. They will be seen by Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene students for assessments, cleanings, oral hygiene instruction and any required x-rays or sealants.

Braeden and Tarren Parris are two of the lucky students who will be visiting the Dental Education Center.

"This is an excellent program," says their mom, Sabera Parris. "This is good for kids who don't get to see a dentist."

Last fall, the Department of Education designated two schools in District 2 to become "Community Schools." In a Community School, partnerships are established to provide new learning opportunities for the students and to expand or provide better access to programs and services already existing in the community.

"This is a great partnership," says Carole Murphy, Community School Coordinator for School District 2. "The Dental College wants their students to gain experience in public health education, and we want our students to learn more about good health! The opportunity for our students to actually visit the clinic is an unexpected bonus!"

The Oulton College Dental Clinic is open to the public and provides services such as cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, assessment, polishing and sealants. Fees range from$15.00 - $60.00 and appointments must be booked in advance.

Fri May 9, 2008: District 2 Regional Heritage Fair

Canadian history came to life in the Capitol Theatre as thirty-seven middle school students proudly displayed their heritage projects on May 6 at the District 2 Regional Heritage Fair. The nine district schools participating in the regional fair were: Bessborough, Caledonia Regional, Dorchester Consolidated, Evergreen Park, Lou MacNarin, Petitcodiac Regional, Port Elgin, Riverview Middle and Shediac Cape.

Throughout the day the students not only had their projects judged, but they also enjoyed enrichment activities which included a guided historic walk in downtown Moncton as well as musical activities of singing and playing rhythms on African djembe drums. The students even demonstrated what they had learned by performing on the main stage of the Capitol Theatre during the afternoon ceremony! Everyone who viewed the student projects were very impressed with the calibre of research, knowledge and creativity shown in the heritage displays. The Minister of Wellness, Culture and Sport, the Hon. Hedard Albert visited the fair in the afternoon and enjoyed viewing the projects and talking with many of the students.

The student chosen to represent District 2 at the 2008 National Historica Fair is Micah Ritzhaupt, a Grade 8 student at Shediac Cape School. It was very evident that Micah had devoted much effort into researching her topic and creating her project display on "Vimy Ridge." Micah is looking forward to her trip to Victoria, BC, on July 7-14.

All students received a designed heritage medallion, a NB Heritage t-shirt as well as other donated prizes.

Tue April 29, 2008: Frye Festival School Program

Hello everyone,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the contributions you made at your school to ensure that the Frye Festival School Program was the success it was. Sometimes events like this make you feel like they get in the way of all you are trying to get done in your schools; however, I promise you that your efforts are worth it.

I saw students proudly display their writing to family and friends at The Bay. Their smiles said it all. I saw High School students proudly read their poetry for classmates, friends, and family at the Aberdeen Cultural Center. I saw High School students proudly step onto the Capital Theatre Stage to receive scholarships for their quality writing. I encourage you to read the winning essay, "The Death of Cool" , written by Ben Lass from BMHS. Ben's essay takes an unflinching look at what really matters versus what we think matters.

I heard an author with a significant following recount with great pride how welcomed he felt during a recent visit to a school in District 2. I heard another author-- exhausted at the end of his full day-- express his amazement at everything the teachers had been able to accomplish. From all accounts, high caliber writing once again came out of the Young Authors event at Riverview Middle. Teachers worked with those students to encourage and to develop that ability.

We are very fortunate to have an event like the Frye Festival in our community. We as a school system should be very proud of the fact that Jennifer McGrath Kent, a graduate of District2, was a participating author this year. In a few short years, one of the students to whom you have provided an opportunity, will be on that stage. Our young writers were given a chance to dream last week because you provided them that opportunity.

Sincere thanks to all staff who assisted in making this year's Frye Festival School Program such a success. Special thanks to Nancy Pipes from Harrison Trimble. Nancy is a member of the Frye Festival organizing committee and spends countless hours/days planning for author visits to schools, collecting student writing for display, organizing evenings for high school students to celebrate their talents and many other actvities which allow so many of our schools and students to enjoy this incredible event. To everyone involved in the Frye Festival, your efforts were very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Norval McConnell, High School Supervisor

Fri April 25, 2008: District 2 Schools Are Going Green!

School District 2 is excited to announce that our district schools are going green! District 2 Goes Green – Small Steps…Big Change is our environmental plan that will focus our efforts to follow sound environmental practices. The Superintendent and senior management are committed to providing leadership and direction for the protection and conservation of the environment. The School District will support the 3 R's of an environmentally sensitive policy to:
  • Reduce
  • Re-use
  • Recycle

The District’s first “small step” is leading the charge to wet and dry waste separation and collection. Superintendent Karen Branscombe states, “The district is pleased to announce that beginning September 2008 our entire district, 38 schools, will be separating school garbage to wet and dry to ensure that we divert as much waste as we can from our landfill site which will allow Westmorland Albert Solid Waste Commission the ability to recycle and reuse as much of the waste as they can.” This is a first in NB for an entire school district to follow this practice. Bill Slater, General Manager of WASWC, states, “We are setting a precedent here. It is a first to have all the schools participating in this program in the Atlantic provinces."

Thur Apr 17, 2008: Riverview Arts Centre Presents Cranked

Cranked Gets Teens Hooked

'Don't do drugs' is a message that kids hear everyday from their parents, schools and the police. It's a message that can fall on deaf ears, especially when it comes to Friday night and teens want to party. Put together a show that has a rapper and a DJ, and then the kids will start to listen.

Green Thumb Theatre's Artistic Director Patrick McDonald and playwright Michael P. Northey have successfully packaged entertainment and facts about crystal meth into gripping and commanding theatre that teens want to watch. "It was awesome! Really intense. Scary in some parts but definitely got the message across," said a grade 10 Windsor Secondary student from North Vancouver.

Cranked is not an after school special. It is a real look at a teenager who is on the brink of becoming the biggest MC but loses it all when he spirals into a wasteland of devastation after getting hooked on meth. McDonald says, "In Cranked Michael has successfully engaged today's generation with the language of their culture. The play is smart, edgy, gripping and ultimately thought-provoking. The music that is integral to the production is superb and brilliantly performed by Kyle Cameron."

Whether it's a kid from West Vancouver High School or Prince Rupert Secondary, the subject tackled in this show has been long overdue. Crystal meth use is becoming an epidemic among both the urban and rural teen populations. One grade eleven student stated, "It's kinda trippy because, just last week, I saw a lady who looked like a real life zombie. It just made me realize that it's here in Terrace." To date, over 45,000 students have seen Cranked. Music and Lyrics in Cranked are by Kyprios and Stylust.

Every second year, Salem Staff, under the direction of Mrs. Lisa Steeves, present an operetta. The students of Salem Elementary School once again have been working hard on their operetta presentation of Let's Put on a Show. This musical play is performed by 93 students in grades 3 and 4. The Musical begins with eight school friends relaxing at Samantha's house already bored at the beginning of their summer vacation. At Stephanie's suggestion, they decide to put on a show and set out in search of talent for their production. They find friends to participate and bring one group at a time to show Stephanie, the group's chosen director, what they are able to contribute. Samantha is anxious to take part, but her attempts are met with little enthusiasm and sometimes laughter as her ideas are at times zany and comedic. However, she is crushed by the response of her "friends" until they realize their mistake and recognize her abilities as "a comedienne." Come enjoy a line dance, highland dancing, a calypso, chorus line and other entertaining numbers as our students present Let's Put on a Show.

When: Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13 &14th, 7:00 pm

Where: Salem Elementary School, 70 Queens Road, Sackville, NB

Thur Apr 24, 2008: Petitcodiac Regional School Celebrates Earth Day

On April 22, the Students at Petitcodiac Regional School participated in an Earth Day Challenge. Those classes that took the challenge agreed to:

  • turn out the lights in their classrooms for the entire day
  • wore green and blue clothing
  • brought in water bottles to reduce the use of paper cups
  • agreed to tell everyone about the no idle zone

This challenge was an entire school from kindergarten to grade 12. The unique catch was that each homeroom had to come up their own challenge as to what their class could do to make a difference. Some classes went outside to collect the garbage around the school, some teachers agreed that they would not make any photocopies on that day, and a class from elementary sang a song to the Earth.

The buzz around the school was exciting for all those involved, and we plan to make it an annual event. The students of all ages are our future leaders and are having an impact on what they can do to make our Earth a better place.

Tue April 29, 2008: District 2 Professional Development, April 30 & May 1

On Wednesday and Thursday we will be completing our district-wide Professional Development efforts for the 2007/2008 school year. We have had a very productive year in School District 2. Teachers, Teacher Assistants and Behavior Interventionists have participated in more district-wide PD than ever before. Most of what we have done this year was designed to get educators together to collaborate on important issues that impact learning. This model of collaboration will continue in the coming years.

On Wednesday, all District 2 staff will meet at the Wesleyan Church on St. George Blvd. to hear Anthony Muhammed. This will be Anthony’s second visit to Moncton. He was here last spring and addressed all of our Administrators. We are certain you will be inspired as Anthony relays his experiences with school improvement in a very challenging learning environment.

On Thursday, everyone will be back in their own schools focusing on school improvement efforts for the coming school year. While there will be a variety of activities going on in different schools, the focus will be on the three big ideas that are essential for a Professional Learning Community:

  1. Focus on Learning
  2. Focus on Collaboration
  3. Focus on Results

Anthony Muhammad

Anthony Muhammad knows first hand what it’s like to transform a troubled school in an underprivileged community into a high-performing educational environment where all students learn, and he is passionate about helping others do the same. His commitment to providing professional development that empowers educators is evident in each presentation he delivers.

Anthony engages participants with his lively sense of humor, thought-provoking insights, and straightforward strategies. He effectively illustrates how Professional Learning Communities can improve schools, sharing his personal experiences. From his keen understanding of the middle-school mind to his intimate knowledge of education’s most pressing challenges, Anthony offers compelling expertise that will motivate your staff.

On Wednesday, Anthony Muhammad's presentation will be focused on the implementation process of transforming a school from a traditional school culture into a Professional Learning Community. We will investigate a linear process/plan that helps educators carefully transition their school cultures in a skilful manner. Levey Middle School in Southfield, Michigan, will be the prototype for this session. Levey is an urban middle school on the border of Detroit, Michigan. Over a five-year period, Levey transitioned from a failing, low-performing school into a U.S. Department of Education Exemplary School using the PLC philosophy.

Thu Mar 13, 2008: A Message from the Superintendent

It was my distinct pleasure as Superintendent of School District 2 to welcome people to the opening of a brand new computer lab at Forest Glen School on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. This lab has been generously donated by Spielo and GTech. This room represents a $20,000 investment with state of the art computers and a bright new learning environment for our students to appreciate.

This computer lab also represents the first Canadian project by GTech's After School Advantage Program. GTech's After School Advantage Program offers children an opportunity to experience the world of computers in first class environments. I am so appreciative of this project and so pleased that one of our Community Schools, Forest Glen, was chosen as the proud recipient of this very first lab.

Over the past years, School District 2 has benefited from many community partners. Business partners have continued to take over 600 Cooperative Education students each year. Community partners are part of our breakfast programs, our after school programs, our drama, and our sports and extra curricular programs and many have contributed to projects such as our Best Seller Library Campaign. Our annual Fill the Bus Food Drive allows for our district staff and students to reach out to the community to assist others in our community each and every year. All of these projects, and many others, could not be possible without partners such as Spielo/GTECH as we all work together towards a common goal: student success.

During the past year, Premier Graham and Education Minister Lamrock introduced an initiative that would further enhance this community linkage work already being done in districts. The Community School initiative has allowed for schools to become designated Community Schools by applying and meeting criteria established by the province. We have been fortunate in our district that both Forest Glen School and Beaverbrook School have been recognized and designated Community Schools. Both schools have benefited from provincial support, additional staff support, and resources. Carole Murphy, School District 2's Community School Coordinator, and David Wheaton, Community School Director, for both Beaverbrook and Forest Glen Schools have worked with community partners to bring new exciting adventures to our students in these two schools.

The goal of a Community School is to foster relationships that transform a traditional school into a centre of learning for the whole community. The school maximizes existing resources and works to develop new partnerships that can provide unique opportunities for our students - these may take the form of actual classroom learning experiences or an afterschool program or a Parent Center, as we will soon be opening at our other Community School, Beaverbrook School. In the case of Forest Glen School, Spielo/GTECH have made it possible for all things to happen here - this bright, wonderful room can be used both during the day and during afterschool hours.

We often ask educators to dream and imagine the ideal school. I ask you this question: "Imagine all schools having partners such as Spielo/GTech to work with as partners for student success." School District 2 is fortunate to have many of these partners and I thank all of you for helping us reach our goals.

Sincerely,

Karen Branscombe

On Thursday, February 21st, 2008, Sunny Brae students were given a glimpse of life in Africa by community members Sherry McLean and Patti Haines. The presenters recently spent time in Rwanda and shared some of their experiences with the students as part of social studies units on World Cultures, Cross-Cultural Communications, Discrimination, and Racism.

Mrs. McLean and Mrs. Haines talked about Rwanda's history, the genocide of 1994, and current ways of life. They showed many pictures of Rwanda's people, including pictures of the orphaned children now housed at the Victory Home of Champions where they volunteered. Students walked away with the understanding that people are people, regardless of ethnicity, skin colour, country of origin, or social situation. At our core we all have similar hopes and dreams - for education, employment, family, friends, and a bright future.

Wed Feb 13, 2008: A Message from the Superintendent

Living in southeastern NB means dealing with winter weather on a regular basis. This year the district has received more snow as of this date (approximately 300cm) than all of last year and certainly more than the average over the last few years. The important task of determining whether schools are canceled during our winter season is a team effort. The school district's number one priority in our entire decision making process is safety. Safety of students and staff is the only factor used when making the decision to close schools. With over 10,000 of our students travelling on busses everyday coming from all parts of southeastern NB, it is critical that the district gathers as much information from our weather and road experts to ensure a safe passage to and from school.

The decision making process starts the day before a potential storm day with detailed weather reports provided by AMEC that provide hourly forecasts of accumulation, precipitation, wind, road temperatures, wind-chill, radar, and satellite information. These reports are monitored all day to prepare for the decision making that begins at 5am the next morning. The forecast from AMEC for Monday morning predicted flurries in the amount of 2 cm of snow and winds up to 15 km per hour over the entire day. As it turned out, the winds were higher as the storm system lingered over our area.

At 5am, the Transportation Manager reviews forecasts from AMEC, Environment Canada, The Weather Network, and other sources. While weather is an important factor, road conditions are also a critical component. The Transportation Manager checks the Department of Transportation (DOT) road cameras and with the DOT Road Patrol that has been driving the roads all night to determine their safety status and condition. Their advice is very important in the decision making process. The Transportation Manager also calls directly to DOT supervisors in charge of plow operators in Port Elgin, Riverside Albert, Hillsborough, Sackville, Indian Mountain, Salisbury and Petitcodiac, and Metro Moncton to see when the plows are going to be out, what work has been done already, and endeavors to determine from those directly on the scene the road conditions in the many areas that comprise the district. Phone calls are also made to neighboring district Transportation Managers and to some of our own school bus drivers who live in outlying parts of the district.

All of this information is compiled and analyzed between 5am and 6am. The decision to close schools must be made at this time in the morning as busses begin their routes at 6am. The decision to close schools is made with the safety of students as a priority. The information gathered from the aforementioned expert sources is reviewed with the Superintendent and a decision is made. The decision is then broadcast to all media outlets immediately and the district website and snowline are also updated immediately.

This year the amount of snow has made the job of clearing streets and sidewalks extremely difficult for road crews in all of our municipalities. Their efforts are at a maximum with the equipment and staff available and patience and care must be taken around all of our school zones. If there are dangerous situations in our school zones they must be reported to the local public works department as soon as possible.

The district is working at posting information that was used in our decision making process on our website and we hope to have this operational in the near future. The decision to close is not taken lightly. Invariably Mother Nature will change her plans and district decisions come under scrutiny. What must be said again is that our decisions are based on the information provided by experts at 5am and the decision is made at 6am in the morning and that the decision is made with safety as our only priority.

Thank you,

Karen Branscombe

Fri Feb 22, 2008: Hillcrest Girls Win Provincial Title

On the weekend coach Eric Peters ( Former Supervisor and Principal District 2) took his middle school girl’s team from Hillcrest to Perth Andover to the provincial championships which they won but that's not the whole story. Coach Eric Peters reports:

"Every one of these kids deserves a lot of credit. They all contributed at one time or another. And the parent support was fantastic. And there is more than just the basketball. When the medals were being presented, mistake was made and a rose was being presented to the Perth-Andover players as they received their silver medals. Suddenly they realized that the roses were intended for the gold medalists (us) and they had to take them back. When it came time to present our medals a very touching and classy thing happened. One by one as our player received her medal and her rose, they crossed the floor and presented their rose to a member of the Perth-Andover team. And it was their idea. These kids are a class act and demonstrated what the spirit of competition is all about."

Fri Feb 15, 2008: Tantramar Regional High School History Challenge

Once again, Tantramar Regional High School Library has set up to host their annual History Challenge. The Challenge was created last year when Rotarian, Maurice “Jake” Fisher donated several books (89, to be exact) to the Library on the subjects of World War I, World War II and the Korean Campaign. Mr. Fisher, a World War II Veteran, wanted to raise the awareness amongst our youth today so that they can appreciate the sacrifices made by their ancestors and also in hopes of never having to face war again.

Students are asked to research an era of time during WWI, WWII or Korea and create a project to submit to the Library no later than Monday, April 7, 2008. There are no limitations as to the projects they can create. Many project themes have been posted, on the display, to give the students some ideas to get them started. The Library has asked that they use their own creativity and enjoy the learning that will take place while doing their projects. The importance of the challenge is to create awareness.

History teachers at the high school are happy to be involved in this challenge and ensure that their students will submit projects (as part of their class mark) that cover one of the wars mentioned above.

All students are encouraged to be part of the History Challenge. As an incentive, the Library will be awarding $100 to our first place winner, $50 to second place, and $25 to our third place winner. So…TITANS, get involved, lest we forget! Contact Karen Noiles, 364-4060

Thu Jan 31, 2008: A Message to Teachers from the Superintendent

Dear Teachers:

During the 2007-2008 school year, School District 2 has embraced a Professional Development Plan that has involved all teachers working together to accomplish improved teaching and learning in our classrooms. On October 26 and again in November, teachers and administrators came together to establish Essential Learnings for our classrooms. This important work is a critical element in improving student learning as we continue to strive to improve the formative assessment practices of teachers.

Knowing what we expect students to know, how we will know when they have learned it, how we will respond with interventions if they have not learned and what will our response be if they already know it, is the vision of the work that is being done in our district. I am thankful that our teachers and administrators have embraced this vision for student learning and are collectively working to improve their teaching practices.

On Monday, January 28, I made a decision to postpone our Professional Development work. Knowing that we would have close to 2000 staff on the roads that day was a worry for me as many of you had to come from miles outside of the city to attend our sessions.

We have now lost 5 instructional days due to weather conditions. Because of this I have made a decision that we will combine our January 28 Professional Development Day with the day planned for the Tuesday following Easter, March 25. I know our work must continue and I am so appreciative of the days that our Minister has provided us this year to focus on student learning. I am also aware that instructional time is necessary for successful student achievement. This is the balancing act for us this year - making good use of instructional time and still finding time to meet collectively to work on common objectives.

I would ask as we go forward this winter that you continue to look for every opportunity to make the best use of your contact time with students to cover Essential Learnings and reach your classroom goals. Working with the parents and our communities, we can achieve great results.

Thank you for your continued hard work as teachers.

Sincerely,

Karen Branscombe

Mon Jan 14, 2008: A Message from the Superintendent

There are so many times in our lives that events happen that we truly do not understand. This year, Southeastern NB has experienced several tragedies resulting in the deaths of many young students. In education, we work hard to define rules, to offer structure to our young adults and to help them understand the world. Asking questions is encouraged. During the most recent tragedy to face our province, the death of 7 young men from Bathurst High School and a teacher has caused us all to reflect on the value of our life, the loved ones we treasure and the constant reminder that we can not define all the rules and structures as accidents do, indeed, happen.

Our district has been touched by the outpouring of support to our schools this school year during several events. In return, we have been able to offer that support to Bathurst High School. I am proud of the basketball team of Moncton High School who were the very last people to see these boys alive. They have handled this situation with class and dignity and they should know that their efforts have not gone unnoticed. I am honored to work with such a caring staff who in the matter of a few minutes, dropped their personal lives and busy work schedules to leave on Sunday afternoon to go help support the Bathurst High School community for as long as needed. These life long lessons of caring communities are what make our region so strong.

As I watched and admired the District 2 production of “Footloose”, I was once again reminded that life is fragile. It was a timely script to produce during this time of tragic accidents in New Brunswick. As we stood at the theatre on Saturday night, sharing a moment of silence for the students from Bathurst High School, heavy hearts prevailed. When the curtains were opened, the energy and enthusiasm of our youth brought us all back to what we do know best – life must go on. As hard as it is to imagine, schools will, once again, be filled with laughter, children will sing and dance and adults will continue to guide and protect as best we can.

There is a saying that we often hear – “Teachers touch a life”. This is known to be true and today, I would offer a second saying in honor of the students who have died this year and who we have all learned from – “Students touch a life”. We have been touched, we will remember and we will grow stronger from these events.

Thank you to all who support our students and watch over them.

Karen Branscombe

Tue Dec 18th, 2007: Go For 42

This year's Leg for Literacy Tri-Community Running Event added a new race element for the year - the GoFor42 Youth Run. This race, open to children aged 5-14, was a 2.2 km fun run loop in Centennial Park.

The program, which first appeared in Fredericton in May, encourages school-aged children to run on a regular basis, tracking their mileage with an overall goal to get to 42.2 km, the distance of a full marathon. The final 'fun run' serves as the symbolic last 2.2km of the simulated marathon distance. All children who participated were assigned an official race bib- just like adult races- and as they crossed the finish line all received a Go For 42 medal recognizing their achievement.

For Jeanne McNeill, Go for 42 Race Coordinator, the important element is the overall message behind Go For 42, "which is the importance of incorporating regular, healthy exercise into the lives of our children. With the increasing influence of video games, TV, movies and computers, this has led to real concerns about childhood inactivity. Such a trend in the formative years can lead to health issues over time", Mc Neill points out. " The Go For 42 program is intended to send the message that, with a little encouragement and structure around an exercise program, fitness can be improved and developed into a lifelong pursuit."

The program was promoted through schools in District 1 and 2. The GoFor42 program and fun run idea seemed to strike a chord with parents and children. By race week, registrations indicated that upwards of over 1100 children participated in the Go For 42 program. Weather concerns late last week no doubt influenced race day decisions to participate in the final run, however about 500 children did show up on the day to run or run/walk their 2.2km distance in dry but brisk conditions. A school in Port Elgin called race organizers the day before the event to indicate that concerns over the weekend weather had forced them to cancel their plans to travel by bus to Moncton for the run, but that they would instead run their final 2.2km at their school, as a means of completing their program. "While we are disappointed they were not able to join us, we heartily congratulate them on their determination and initiative", McNeill enthused.

Race organizers consider this first year a great success. Many parents accompanied their children in the fun run. The race featured some inspirational opening words from Patty Blanchard, a Grade 8 teacher from Riverview who also happens to be an accomplished, elite-level distance runner. Blanchard indicated that 120 kids from her school took part, and that she was encouraged to see so many parents and families participating.

Thu Dec 6th, 2007: Riverview Middle Food Drive and Dance

Christmas is a joyous time of year that is shared with family and friends. Christmas can also be a stressful and unpleasant time of year, especially for those who are less fortunate than most people. The Riverview Middle School Mahatma Leadership Group would like to do something to help those who may need a little boost at Christmas time. On December 12, 2007, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., the Mahatma Leadership Group will be holding a food drive for the Albert County Food Bank in conjunction with a Christmas Dance. The Mahatma group also wants to involve more than just the school community; therefore, the food drive will be open to the greater Riverview community as well.

Mahatma wants to invite the entire community to drop off food items at the school theatre lobby during the dance (entrance at rear of building). We want anyone and everyone who is willing to help out in our endeavour to join in this great cause. Hopefully together we can spread the word about our food drive. We will not only be helping those in the Albert county area, but those specifically in our school community.

The students will also be helping out. Instead of the students paying the usual $4.00 entrance fee, they will be charged $3.00, plus a non-perishable food item. The dance will be open to grades 6 through 8 and we will have a theme for the students' enjoyment. Mahatma is very excited about the food drive and is hoping for a successful night!

Hope to see you there!

Mon Dec 3rd, 2007: Hat Day for Devon Richards

November 30 was a unique day for schools in the Tantramar region. All five of the schools came together for a day and had a Hat Day to support Sackville's Devon Richards.

According to Tantramar Regional High School Principal Don McCormack, it is the first time that all of the schools in the Tantramar region have gotten together and held the same type of event on the same day for the same cause.

Students paid $1 for a hat license, which they stuck onto their hat, and they were allowed to wear their hat in school for the day. The total sum accumulated from all five schools (Tantramar High, Marshview Middle, Salem Elementary, Dorchester Consolidated, and Port Elgin Regional) was $1900, all of which is being donated towards Devon Richards.

Devon was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in September of this year. Aplastic Anemia prevents the bone marrow from producing new red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. His 3 1/2 -year old sister was the donor for the bone marrow transplant which occurred October 18 at the sick children's hospital in Toronto.

Devon was placed in isolation upon his arrival to Toronto on October 8 and, exactly a month after the transplant, doctors were pleased enough with his progress that, on November 18, Devon left isolation for the first time since arriving so he could watch Toronto's Santa Claus Parade.

According to Jill Blakeney, a family friend of the Richards', Devon should be making his return to the Maritimes fairly soon but to the IWK in Halifax.

The timing for this event could not have been much better; not only is it coming at a time when Devon needs the support from his schoolmates and fellow students from other schools but, on December 1, a day after the Hat Day held to support him, he celebrated his twelfth birthday.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Devon can do so at the Royal Bank in Sackville. Also, there is a website set up where Devon's updates can be read and well-wishes sent. The address is www.caringbridge.org/visit/devonrichards.

The Queen Elizabeth School choir performed five songs live on stage at the Capitol Theatre Thursday evening, Nov. 15th with The Cobblestones, a musical group from Newfoundland. "Feet of a Dancer", which is one of their original songs, won an East Coast Music Award (ECMA).

This "family"-rated concert was a mixture of music, humour, and impressions and marked the second time the QES choir performed with this great group, having sung with them previously in April, 2006. This was a wonderful learning experience for our girls and boys to perform in a professional venue with a professional group of musicians. The National Addiction Awareness Week is November 18th to the 24th. This Year, National Addictions Awareness Week has decided to take one step back to take two ahead. We replaced it with “It takes a HEALTHY community to raise a child”, because that’s what one week of sobriety should mean: a healthy community to raise our future generations.

We hope that this one week of non-addictions would show some people that it really is a more satisfying way of life. We hope that this one week could become the first week of the rest of their lives. We hope that we create healthy people, healthy families, healthy communities and ONE HEALTHY NATION!

Please participate actively or passively, however you prefer, but join us in a betterment of your loved ones by enjoying a addictive-free week between November 18-24, 2007! Contact us at 1-800-459-1884, and ask for the NAAW COORDINATOR.

Fri Nov 2, 2007: Ten Needles

The book "Ten Needles" was written by Sean Collins who was 13 years old when he passed away on July, 9, 2007, following a courageous battle against cancer. Before he passed away, Sean wanted to fulfill one last dream: to publish a book. When we talk about cancer, we tend to think that it only happens to others, or only to adults. Now Sean brings a more tangible awareness of cancer through his book project; the young and young at heart who participate and read the book will have the fruits of his vision in their hands. They will be making an active contribution to Sean's dream.

Sean was known for his determination and his courage. He was a source of inspiration for those who knew him. As president of the student council last year, Sean managed to motivate his school mates to raise more than $22,000 for the Tree of Hope. The Ten Needles committee will be calling on Principals to discuss their interest in getting the children and parents involved in the sale of this book. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Tree of Hope campaign. Tue Oct 30, 2007: Spooktacular Station Games at Salisbury Elementary

The gymnasium at Salisbury Elementary was haunted for a few days as physical education classes were treated to some Halloween frights. Eight thematic activity stations were created and the atmosphere was enhanced with scary music, dim lights and a creepy creature.... oops, teacher. At the graveyard station, for example students were required to perform crunches before they could 'rest in peace'. Skeleton bones were rattled by throwing or striking orange balls at them. At the cat walk station, students crossed a balance beam like a cat without falling off. There was even a bat cave (created with mats folded accordian style and draped with a parachute) through which students pushed themselves on scooters. A great way to practice fundamental skills in a special event.

Tue Oct 30, 2007: Provincial TADD Conference at JMA

JMA Armstrong High TADD group recently held a provincial conference at JMA Armstrong High. Much planning and organization went into the project since late spring of last year. The group at JMA, which consists of about 25 students from grades 9-12, worked very hard to get the school ready for our guests. The conference was an opportunity for youth from across the province to get together and share ideas about successful ways to promote good choices surrounding the issue of driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The conference had fun acitivities such as ice breakers, a variety show, a dance, and a relay race as well as more serious presentations by paramedics and fire fighters that responded to the O'Dell accident last year, an officer from Corrections Canada who talked about the reality of life in prison, MADD Southeast, New Brunswick Youth Alliance, and Sunjay Nath who talked about making good choices for you and for your community. One hundred twenty-five students and adults from the following schools particpated in the two day event: Bonar Law Memorial School, Woodstock High, John Caldwell School, James M. Hill, Hampton High, Rothessay High, Miramichi Valley High School, Bellisle Regional High, Bathursat High, Stanley High School, and JMA Armstrong High. Fri Oct 26, 2007: School Walking Programs

With the beautiful fall weather, many schools in District 2 have implemented walking programs with their students. Here are some highlights from around the district:

Riverside Consolidated: "We walk every day, either at recess or noon, sometimes both when it is a beautiful day and we have available staff. We have the TransCanada Trail on our school property, so we walk to a point in the village .5 away from school, and back. The kids’ distances are recorded individually and as a class, and finally as a school. So far, we have walked over 1000 km. We are trying to get across Canada. There is a big map in the hall, with pins recording the distance, and feet highlighting the cities we pass along the way. All kids have walked some kms, many have walked almost every day. We have necklaces with little feet and shoes on them, that kids can earn for walking increments of 5 km. Each Monday the names are announced of those who have earned a new piece for their necklace. They proudly wear these at school, but don’t take them home."

Dorchester Consolidated: "Student in grades K-2 warm up the gym for our Walking Group of Seniors, the seniors walk each morning from 9-10 a.m. as part of the VON program, where seniors walk and the VON do blood pressure checks. This is a great program where our younger students interact with the community."

Forest Glen: "We walk every morning from 7:50-8:10am in our gym as part of our Kids in Action (KIA) program. As you can see it is open to all K-4 students, staff and parents."

Bessborough: "Guinness World Record Walk...Over 500 Bessborough students, teachers and family members join the rest of Canada trying to establish a new world record for most people walking 1 km at the same time."

Sunny Brae: "The photo below was taken during our Sunny Brae Healthy Walk/Run on September 28th, 2007. Every month we take our students around the U of M campus, covering approximately 2.5 km to raise awareness on physical activity."

Operation Red Nose also needs people to answer phones and do other important jobs. This Holiday season, we will be operating from 9 pm – 2:45 am Nov. 30 & Dec. 1, Dec. 7 & 8, Dec. 14 & 15 and Dec. 21 & 22.

The dispatch center is located in the basement of the Wawanesa Building at 1010 St. George Blvd. Volunteers are asked to meet at the dispatch centre at 7:30 pm for a briefing session and to form teams.

For more information about volunteering, please visit www.operationrednose.ca, call (506) 384-7433, or e-mail moncton@operationnezrouge.com.

Mon Oct 22, 2007: Tantramar Spookwalk

Tantramar Regional High School has an annual Spookwalk taking place on Oct. 29th, from 6-8pm. This consists of many volunteer students (about 100) getting together to transform the foyer and basement areas into a creepy, scary, haunted Halloween tour. There is an entry fee of $2 with costume and $3 without costume. There will also be a "Kids' Room" off the foyer (cafeteria area) which is tamed down in order to not scare the children (usually under 6) too much. It's well worth the visit! Mon Oct 22, 2007: Professional Development Day

The 2007-2008 school year will have a different look for professional development opportunities. In the past, we have had two days during the school year to focus on curriculum development. This year, we are fortunate to have four additional professional development (PD) days in the school calendar for a total of six. The first of these days is Friday, October 26th at Moncton High School. There will be no school for students on this day.

Superintendent Karen Branscombe introduced four questions to the district in August, 2006. These questions have become the framework for our professional conversations regarding student learning in School District 2. The four questions were:

  1. What is it we want them to learn?
  2. How will we know if they have learned it?
  3. What will we do if they do not learn it?
  4. What will we do if they already know it?

On October 26th we will begin the process of looking at our curriculum outcomes to decide which outcomes are essential and will lead students to enduring understandings in each subject area. We will do this by gathering together teachers from each curricular area to look at the outcomes for their subject.

There are many reasons why this will be an important exercise for School District 2. A few of them include:

  • A movement towards consensus on what elements of the curriculum are essential
  • Opportunity for subject teachers to talk with others who teach the same subject (this is especially important for teachers from small schools where they are the only teacher at that level)
  • Opportunity for experienced teachers to share their knowledge of the curriculum with new teachers
  • Opportunity for teachers who teach a subject with an outdated or vague curriculum to agree on what should be taught so we have consistency in all of our schools
  • For more information please contact Gregg Ingersoll, Learning Specialist, at 856-3635.

This was followed by a demonstration of a huge harvester used today which combines three steps into one. Wed Sep 19, 2007: Superintendent's Letter to Times & Transcript

The following was the Times & Transcript's Letter of the Day for September 19th, 2007:

I am writing this letter to celebrate the strong sense of pride I am feeling in our Harrison Trimble students following last week's tragic accident.

Words cannot describe the feeling of loss that we all felt at the four funerals held for Brandon, Jimmy, Jared and Corey. One person described it to me as a dark cloud that was hanging over Harrison Trimble for the entire week.

In every cloud there is a silver lining; the unique opportunity that I had last week to share in so many wonderful moments with our Harrison Trimble students was the silver lining for me.

From Sunday to Thursday, I was overwhelmed with the maturity and sense of "doing the right thing" that I experienced from our youth.

As hard as it was, the students stood in line at the funeral home to visit with the families. Through their tears, they shared their stories with me and understood that this was going to be a hard week. They also demonstrated that they understood that they had to do difficult things and be there for each other.

At each funeral, I was amazed at their strength. Many of us adults looked to them for strength and I remember thinking that if they can do this and get through all of this grief, so can we who are charged with looking after them.

As teachers and parents, we learned great lessons last week from these students. On Thursday, as we all stood outside the church at Corey's funeral, there was a sense of closure -- this was the last funeral, this was the end. The students knew that their lives had changed and that the memories of the four boys and the accident had changed their teenage years forever.

I know that we have healing days ahead. I also know that the students of Harrison Trimble have reinforced my belief in today's youth.

It is with honour and pride that I represent this district and its schools. Thank you to the Trimble students for supporting all of us last week with class and dignity.

Karen Branscombe, Superintendent of School District 2

Tue Sep 11, 2007: Tragic Death of Harrison Trimble Students

School District 2 was saddened to learn of the tragic death of four grade 11 students from Harrison Trimble High School on Saturday, September 8, 2007.

The district is responding to the tragedy by providing grief counseling and psychologist services to the students. The school was opened on Sunday night to students and over 200 students took advantage of this opportunity to gather together as a school community.

"Throughout this week, students and families will have an opportunity to receive counseling and support at the school. Safety and comfort to our Harrison Trimble School community is the priority of the district at this time. All efforts will be made to offer services at the school for all those who need support for as long as necessary," stated District 2 Superintendent Karen Branscombe. The district's tragic response team has been on site since Sunday morning. The school staff met on Sunday to prepare for receiving students Monday morning. All extra-curricular activities are cancelled for this week and classes will be held each day. Every effort will be made by all school and district staff to provide a safe and caring environment for those who are grieving. The school will remain open for the week and additional adult support is being provided from other schools in the district."

"The strength of the school community is evident as families and friends supported one another during the past 24 hours. We all know that accidents happen and that time will assist in this healing process. It is our commitment, at this time, to help with the grieving process and to continue ongoing support to the students, staff, and families. The thoughts and prayers of the entire school district family are with the parents, families, and friends of the young men killed on Saturday," Branscombe said.

Tue Sep 11, 2007: Georgetown School Reunion

The students of the now-demolished Georgetown School had a reunion over the summer. The completion of Georgetown School in 1912 brought the total number of schools in Moncton to five. By 1951, Georgetown School was bulging at the seams so decisions were made to send students to Victoria and Edith Cavell Schools. The school was demolished in 1961.

A book has been written about the history of Georgetown School by Claudia Richard. Claudia lives in Sussex and can be reached at 506-433-1201. Copies of the book can be found at the Moncton Museum, in the Heritage Room at the Moncton Library, and in the lobby at the School District 2 office.

Karen Branscombe, Superintendent of School District 2, and Debbie Brine, Transition to Work Consultant with School District 2, will be the guest speakers at the The Moncton Rotary Club on Monday, September 10th at 12pm at the Delta Hotel.

School District 2 invites community leaders to become more involved with literacy. Reading and writing skills are critical to successful employment in this region. Our business leaders recognize the need for these skills in the workplace and District 2 is partnering with our business community to fufill those needs.

School District 2 will be presenting an overview of a new School to Work Transition initiative for high school "at risk" students. Included in the presentation will be an overview of the community and employer involvement to date. There are excellent opportunities for Rotary to become involved with our youth in a meaningful and direct way as part of this new strategy. It is hoped that together we can develop a dynamic, innovative approach that not only helps us to better meet the needs of our youth but also provides benefits to our community and private sector.
