Wed Jul 13, 2005: School District 2 Summer Programs
This year from July 4th to July 28th School District 2 is offering the 3rd Annual Summer Academic Intervention Program. This summer camp, designed for middle school students, is being offered at Edith Cavell School, Salisbury Middle /J.M.Armstrong School and Marshview Middle School. Smaller tutoring programs, also for middle school students, are being offered at Riverside Consolidated and Havelock Schools. A total of 110 students from 22 different schools are attending this years summer programs. This is a learning camp where students choose to attend and receive specific instruction based upon learning needs with a specific focus on literacy and numeracy skills. Upon completion of the program, parents and the students' school, each receive reports on the learning that has occurred for each student.
Students attend small classes with teacher student ratios of 1-12. The classes are held in the morning only and on Thursdays the schools congregate and have a special activity day. This year's activities include visiting Fort Beausejour, the Tantramar Wetlands Centre, the Rocks at Hopewell Cape, the Magnetic Hill Zoo, the Olivier Soapery and the Irving Eco-Centre, La Dune de Buctouche.
The summer camp is being taught by teachers who have experience with the curriculum. In addition to having experience, the instructors have the opportunity to work with smaller classes, which allows time to give more attention to individual students learning needs. The program, by offering an extra month of teaching, gives the students the opportunity to reinforce their English and Mathematics skills.
School District 2 is also conducting tutoring sessions for over one hundred students who are entering grade 3 in September 2005 receiving tutoring this summer. This tutoring program, which is eight weeks in length, has five teachers involved at eight school sites across the District. Students are attending tutoring sessions twice a week with either one on one or one on two teacher student ratios for instruction. The teaching focuses on guided reading, vocabulary work, fluency, comprehension and writing skills, depending upon individual's needs. The program allows for students to receive instruction that is specific to their needs.

Thu Jun 09, 2005: Grade 4 Intensive French Pilot Program Report
Dr. Claude Germaine and Dr. Joan Netten researchers in French Second Language presented the District Education Council for School District 2 with a year end report about the Grade 4 Intensive French Pilot Project held in six School District 2 schools this past year.
This program is being piloted as a response to the need to enhance the Core French program. The program sees students study the French language for approximately two hours a day for the first half of the school year. The instruction is a literacy based model where students will focus on the four components of language acquisition: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
The overall results of the program are very encouraging. Students in the District pilot classes achieved results in French similar to Grade 2 Francophone students, with a Grade 3 rating in fluency and a Grade 1.5 rating in accuracy. In addition to the student results there are other positive elements of the pilot such as the method used to teach French, success for low achieving students, the attention to literacy, and the program allows for continued development of the child's first language. Parents surveyed were also very pleased with the improvement in their child's language and would like to see the program to continue.

Thu Mar 24, 2005: Possible Labour Dispute
As you may be aware, the Province of New Brunswick is currently involved in contract negotiations with the New Brunswick Teachers' Federation which represents school teachers and administrators.
It is our hope that these discussions will be fruitful and a work disruption can be avoided. However, in the event of a disruption and/or withdrawal of services, regular classes and extra curricular activities for students may be affected.
The Department of Education has determined that students will report to school during a period of work to rule on the part of teachers; however, classes will be cancelled if teachers' services are to be totally withdrawn.
Both the Department of Education and School District 02 deeply regret the possible loss of classroom instruction time for students and the inconvenience a withdrawal of services could cause parents or guardians. It is our sincere hope this can be avoided but we must be prepared for any eventuality.
We would advise you to stay informed on this issue and listen to your local radio station in the mornings for any announcement affecting regular classes.
Karen Branscombe, Superintendent

Mon Feb 14, 2005: A Message From The Minister Of Education
"Of all the factors that affect the development of a society, education is one of the most important. Its cornerstone role derives from the decisive influence it exerts on the lives of individuals, social and economic organization, culture, and knowledge. It is therefore fair to say that our province's future is being shaped in our schools.
On the occasion of Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, I want to thank all those who ensure that our schools function smoothly. It is because of the work of hundreds of people, including teachers, school principals, support staff, superintendents and districts staff, health professionals, guidance counsellors and school bus drivers, that our children are able to learn every day.
The Government of New Brunswick is likewise firmly committed to a quality education system. That is why the provincial funding allocated to public education has risen constantly since 1999. It is also why we have pledged to add 500 new teaching positions by 2006.
I encourage students, parents, and the public to show their appreciation to all those working within the public education system. Thanks to their professionalism and dedication, our students receive a top-quality education that will equip them to meet the challenges of tomorrow."

These sessions will see parents presented with a number of ideas to help parents encourage their child's learning as they get ready to send them off to school. Parents will hear what four year olds are typically able to do in the four major areas of development for young children; social, emotional, language and motor development. In addition, parents will be presented with a number of age appropriate activities they will be able to do with their child at home to foster further development and prepare them for school.
Brenda Mawhinney, Early Years Supervisor for School District 2, is hoping parents will use this opportunity to get to know their neighbourhood school and to encourage their child's learning, as he/she gets ready to go to school. "This is an important step in developing a relationship between the home and school," stated Mawhinney. It is very important to School District 2 that we meet all the needs of our students not only today but in the future. School District 2 is providing the information below as a resource for families to help any children who may be having trouble coping. Also, parents may contact their neighbourhood school to discuss their child's situation with a school administrator or the school counsellor.
As the world struggles to comprehend the enormity of the disaster that has struck in the Bay of Bengal, and as many Canadians experience personal loss, our children are looking to us for guidance.

Mon Dec 06, 2004: 2004 Christmas Concerts
School District 2 has released the schedule for the 2004 Christmas Season. Steve Mitton, Supervisor of Communications and Partnerships for School District 2, noted that many of our schools have released two concert times. The reason for this is to allow those who can attend during the day to do so to avoid overcrowded gyms for evening performances. Also of note are schools who do not hold their Christmas Show at their own school. For example, Forest Glen School will be holding its concert at Moncton High School. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to see their children perform. In fact, for many schools the Christmas Show is the major event for the school.

Tue Aug 31, 2004: School Drop Off Areas
Four schools in School District 2 will open their doors with new drop off lanes for parents to drop off children who are being driven to school.
The drop off lanes were constructed over the summer months and are designed to help automobiles and bus traffic separate to lessen traffic congestion in school bus loading zones. Bessborough School, Shediac Cape School, Port Elgin Regional School and Evergreen Park School have had new drop off zones built designated for parents to let their children off at school.
Parents of children at these schools are encouraged to use these areas to help get the school year off to a good start. Bessborough School will have Home and School parents at their drop and ride lane, which is off Milner Avenue. The lane is located off Milner Avenue, where parents will drop their child, and then proceed out of the drop area onto Athlone Avenue. The reason for the Bessborough location not being at the front of the building is to lessen vehicle traffic on Bessborough Avenue and allow buses easier access to the school.
In addition to the four schools previously mentioned, Harrison Trimble High School and Moncton High School have drop zones under construction and they will be in operation later this fall.
School District 2 Superintendent Karen Branscombe noted "having these improvements in place for the first day of school gives bus students, as well those being driven to school improved access to their school while lessening traffic congestion around the schools".
