DEC - Strategic Objectives

  1. We will maximize quality learning time in the classroom.
    • Essential core learnings will be defined.
    • Current literacy initiatives will be expanded.
    • Curriculum flexibility will be maximized (to include appropriate course availability such as trades and technology, life skills, successful engagement of students, retention and diminished curriculum change frequency).
    • Wellness issues will be given increased attention (including nutrition and phys ed).
    • Community resources will be maximized (ie libraries, members of the business community, organizations and agencies, etc.).
    • Access to transition planning, including career planning resources will be improved.
    • Student's individual needs will be appropriately supported (including enrichment needs).
  2. We will collect and analyze appropriate student data regularly.
    • Academic testing will be carried out at consistent time periods to ensure reliable comparisons and inform student development.
    • Auxiliary testing by partners will be encouraged at various stages of student development to maximize student success. (ie. Department of Health vision and hearing exams, assessments of learning challenges).
    • Perception data will be collected routinely and analyzed to provide guidance for School Improvement Plans and District Education Plans.
    • Early detection / identification of student learning challenges will be a priority.
  3. We will build a communication and partnership plan.
    • Solid development of relationships and partnerships with various stakeholders (including business communities, Department of Education, other government agencies, parents, staff, students, teachers, Universities and other post secondary institutions, other associations and stakeholders) to advance the needs of our students.
    • The DEC will take an active advocacy role on behalf of School District 2.
    • Dispute resolution and mediation protocol will be defined.
    • Communication tools will be developed and implemented.
    • The School Improvement Plan will be a central communication link.
  4. We will enhance our positive learning environment.
    • A respectful atmosphere will be promoted.
    • Staff will be empowered and provided professional development.
    • Healthy relationships among students will be nurtured (including enhancing discipline and anti-bullying programs).
    • Parents will be encouraged and supported to have meaningful involvement in their child's education.
    • Enhancement of the positive learning environment will include high standards, high expectations, increased resources, attention to classroom composition and respect for attendance.
    • Enhanced building / infrastructure maintenance will be a priority.
    • Adequate and appropriate support and resources will be pursued.
