A "Community School" fosters relationships that transform a traditional school into a centre of opportunity for children, youth, families and communities. When a community school is established, parents businesses and community members work in partnership with educators to support schools as centres of learning for their communities by leveraging the physical, intellectual and cultural resources in the community around them. A community school acts to strengthen the sense of community by serving as a hub of community activity and development.
A quick glance at "What’s Happening" on our website shows you that District 2 schools have been working in partnership with community groups for many years. Every school is a little different, with programs and initiatives that reflect the community they serve as well as the interests and passions of the students.
There are six schools that are "designated" Community Schools. These six schools underwent an application process and created a vision for development which was submitted to the Department of Education. These designated schools have served as models for community development, piloting programs and nurturing partnerships with local stakeholders. Click on the name of the school to visit their website and read about their projects.
Over the past four years, some very special partnerships and programs have developed as a result of the Community School initiative. Many of these programs are now spreading to other schools to serve more students. Click on the links below to learn more...
